Zambia Wildlife Safari
Bush Camp-based Walking Wildlife Safari in South Luangwa National Park
If you've dreamed of experiencing the wildlife drama of Africa on foot like the first explorers while being pampered in "bush luxury" with afternoon tea and fine al fresco dining, this is the trip for you. Morning and evening we explore the wilds on guided walks and by open vehicle for breathtaking animal encounters – afternoon and night we're spoiled with sumptuous meals and cozy accommodations.
Day 1: Arrival in Lusaka-Flight to South Luangwa National Park-Mfuwe Lodge
We’re met on arrival at Zambia’s Lusaka airport and transferred to our light aircraft for the flight to South Luangwa National Park. Here we’re met and driven by open safari vehicle to gracious Mfuwe Lodge. We have time to relax before an evening game drive with opportunities to see elephants, lions, buffalo, wild dogs, hippos, antelope, crocs and the panoply of African bird life.
Days 2-8: Chamilandu, Chindeni and Kapamba Bush Camps
This morning we drive to our first bush camp deep within the wilderness of South Luangwa National Park and immerse ourselves in primal Africa. Fed by the mighty Luangwa River, massive South Luangwa (at almost 3500 square miles, it’s larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined) is one of the wildest and most pristine game sanctuaries in the world. The richness and diversity of environments created by the Luangwa River supports a density of wildlife unsurpassed in Africa. Over 15,000 elephants, 25,000 buffalo, 20,000 hippos, thousands of crocodiles, a dozen antelope species, giraffes, zebras, and the full array of great predators--lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas--plus 400 bird species - all make the Park their home. Little has changed here since David Livingstone crossed this area in the 1800’s. Our walking safaris are the cornerstone of our bush experience. This is one of the few great game parks in Africa you can explore on foot, guided by expert naturalists, and experience the way the first explorers did, directly in touch with that wild beauty and raw excitement only Africa can deliver. The park also features night game drives where we experience the bush after dark, the best time to see animals like the leopard. And all our game drives are done in open vehicles for the best game viewing and most exhilarating encounters. We’re up early each morning for a light breakfast followed by a morning bush, then return to camp fora hearty brunch and siesta followed by afternoon “tea”, an evening game driveor bush walk with a relaxing “sundowner”, then a sumptuous dinner capped offwith drinks around the campfire.
Days 9-10: Mfuwe Lodge-Departure
Depending on logistics, we return to Mfuwe Lodge this morning or afternoon. We enjoy bush walks and game drives and have the option of visiting a local village school and textile market. The final morning is the end of our safari and we transfer to Mfuwe International Airportfor our onward flights.
The itinerary above describes the High Season tours. Low (Green) Season tours will use Mfuwe Lodge and Kapamba camp only.
