Guatemala-Tikal
Multi-Sport

Hike, Bike, Kayak, Zip Line Canopy Tour, and Explore Archeological Sites in the Cradle of the Mayan Civilization

This exhilarating itinerary takes you to the country's highlights plus off-the-beaten path destinations to explore Guatemala like few will! Climb an active volcano, bike through spectacular scenery on local trade routes, kayak on renowned Lake Atitlan, see the spectacular ruins of Tikal and visit colorful local markets.

The following describes the 2008 itinerary. There are some minor differences in the 2007 program--call us for details.

Days 1-3 Antigua-Comolapa-Alaska-Zunil Ridge. Transfer from the airport in Guatemala City to the former colonial capital and World Heritage Site of Antigua for a stroll through its cobblestone streets. Visit the market and artesans in Comolapa and bike and hike through some of the country's most spectacular scenery in the highlands of "Alaska" along local paths. Spend a night in the home of a local Mayan family.

Days 4-6 Lake Atitlan-Cerro de Oro-Los Tarales-Pacaya National Park. Kayak what many have called "the most beautiful lake in the world" and gaze at the surrounding volcanoes. Pass local fishermen, indigenous Mayan women doing their chores and men working the fields in their embroidered Santiago shorts. Hike to a spectacular lookout high above Lake Atitlan and then visit the area's most important vegetable market. Visit a coffee farm before returning to Antigua and then hike to the top of Pacaya Volcano, where we peer down at the spewing lava and enjoy spectacular views to the coast.

Days 7-9 Peten-Tikal-Guatemala City. We transfer to Guatemala City for our flight to the northern rainforest in Peten. A guided tour of Tikal, the mystical center of the Mayan civilization set deep in the jungle, is a must for any visit to Guatemala! Watch for howler and spider monkeys and coatimundis as you wander the grounds amid the various temples. Then take a thrilling zipline canopy tour and experience the feeling of being an eagle! An afternoon flight returns us to Guatemala City for a free evening to enjoy the nightlife before being transfered the following morning to the airport for your flight home.
