This exhilarating itinerary takes you to the country's highlights plus off-the-beaten path destinations to explore Guatemala like few will! Climb an active volcano, bike through spectacular scenery on local trade routes, kayak on renowned Lake Atitlan, see the spectacular ruins of Tikal and visit colorful local markets.
Days 1-3: Antigua-Pacaya Volcano-Alaska Highlands
Transfer from the airport in Guatemala City to the former colonial capital and World Heritage Site of Antigua for a stroll through its cobblestone streets. Bike from Antigua through local villages before ascending Pacaya, an active volcano. Bike through some of the country's most spectacular scenery in the highlands of "Alaska" along local paths, concluding with a home stay in Totonicapan.
Days 4-5: Alaska Highlands-Lake Atitlan and Cerro de Oro
Venture deeper into the spectacular highlands by mountain bike. Kayak what many have called "the most beautiful lake in the world" and gaze at the surrounding volcanoes. Pass local fishermen, indigenous Mayan women doing their chores and men working the fields in their embroidered Santiago shorts. Hike to a spectacular lookout high above Lake Atitlan and visit the village of Santiago.
Days 6-7: Chichicastenango Market-Antigua-Uaxactun
Visit the artisans and craftsman at the famous market in Chichicastenango before returning to Antigua for an afternoon hike. The following morning a flight takes us to the northern rainforest in Peten. We begin with an exhilarating zipline adventure and then visit the Mayan complex of Uaxactun, famous as an astrological site.
Days 8-9: Tikal-Antiqua-Guatemala City
A guided tour of Tikal, the mystical center of the Mayan civilization set deep in the jungle, is a must for any visit to Guatemala! Watch for howler and spider monkeys and coatimundis as you wander the grounds amid the various temples. An afternoon flight returns us to Guatemala City for a shuttle back to antigua and our farewell dinner. You're then free to enjoy the nightlife before being transfered the following morning to the airport for flights home.
