Spanish Pyrenees Hiking Tour

Hike the mighty Pyrenees of northern Spain

From fabulous Barcelona we make our way to the wonderland of granite and crystalline waters of the Val de Boí—UNESCO World Heritage Site and gateway to Aigüestortes I Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. We next venture to Spain's renowned Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park.

Day 1: Barcelona

Upon arrival in Barcelona explore on your own today the sights and sounds of this vibrant Mediterranean port city and proud capital of Catalonia.  Highlights include the works of Antoni Gaudi in Parc Guell as well as his never completed Sagrada Familia. A stroll down the tree-lined pedestrian mall, La Rambla, is a must after a satisfying dinner.

Days 2-4: Val de Boí - Taüll - Aigüestortes National Park

We transfer this morning to the picturesque stone village of Taüll located in the heart of the Val de Boí, a narrow, steep-sided valley renowned for its Romanesque architecture, famous ski resorts and medicinal waters.  From this UNESCO World Heritage Site we embark on three days of hikes in the Aigüestortes I Estany de Sant Maurici National Park.  We visit the 12th Century St. Climent church, hike to a viewpoint above Lake St. Maurici with views of Les Encantats, the "enchanted" mountains. Our last day here takes us on a circular route through black pine forests and alpine meadows, visiting glacial cirques and numerous lakes ringed by 3000 meter peaks.

Days 5-7: Torla - Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park

A transfer delivers us to the lovely mountain village of Torla located in yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site that spans the Spanish-French border and enshrouds Monte Perdido, the 11,000-foot "Lost Mountain". We hike amidst an abundance of wildflowers in Ordesa Canyon to beautiful Horse's Tail waterfall.  Marmots, chamoix and bearded vultures are possible sightings.  Our final day of hiking takes us up the canyon walls for superb views and beech forest before returning to the valley floor and our closing dinner in Torla.

Day 8: Pamplona - San Sebastian -Bilbao

Our tour ends after breakfast with a transfer to Spain's Basque country on the Atlantic Coast.  We pass through Pamplona and San Sebastian en route to Bilbao for our trip's conclusion.
